Harper Government invests in the GTA’s Advanced Manufacturing Sector, creating highly-skilled jobs

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO– Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario)

Gary Goodyear of FedDev Ontario, along with the MPs Barry Butt and Stella Ambler, announced a critical investment that will speed up the development and economic commercialization of new, first-in-Canada medical devices to be used by heart physicians during procedures.

Baylis Medical, a company that specializes in manufacturing and distributing medical devices, will recieve an amount of $15.2 million in repayable contributions under FedDev Ontario’s Advanced Manufacturing Fund.

The Canadian Governments investment will allow Baylis Medical to manufacture and commercial sell three new medical device products lines and improve their in-house manufacturing. Baylis Medicals global competiveness will increase and this will strengthen the Ontario market for medical devices.

This project will lead to the creation of transformative products and first-in-Canada technologies, to help the Ontario manufacturing sector for medical devices, create high quality goods, and highly skilled employment to compete in the global market.

  • The manufacturing sector is a major contributor to Canada’s economy, employing more than 1.7 million Canadians, of which nearly 750,000 live in Ontario. It also accounts for half of the business R&D in Canada and generated sales of $621.7 billion in 2014, including $286.6 billion in sales for Ontario.
  • Nearly 80,000 manufacturing establishments exist across the country with more than 32,000 manufacturing establishments exist in southern Ontario.
  • The Harper Government has provided 1.4 billion dollars or tax relief to the manufacturing sector and total business tax costs in Canada are now the lowest in the G7.

BACKGROUND

FedDev Ontario Investment in Baylis Medical Company

Through the Advanced Manufacturing Fund (AMF), FedDev Ontario is providing Baylis Medical Company Inc. with a repayable contribution of up to $15.2 million.

Baylis Medical is a Canadian-based manufacturer and distributor of medical devices, with its research and development and manufacturing facility located in Mississauga, Ontario.The Government of Canada’s contribution will match Baylis’ investment to accelerate the development and commercialization of the company’s new, first-in-Canada medical devices that will be used by doctors during heart procedures. The project will involve three new products or product lines including:

  • Baylis’ Advanced Pacemaker Lead Placement Products. This is a system of specialized catheters and guide wires that will aid physicians in gaining left heart access – a task that is challenging with current technology.
  • Epicardial Access Products. Baylis’ suite of specialized tools will provide physicians with epicardial access to the heart. This new access method will be used to treat irregular heart rhythms and is considered an innovative and unique solution to gaining controlled access to the heart.
  • Baylis’ Hydrophilic Coated Radiofrequency Guidewire will be used in the endovascular treatment of blocked blood vessels. Baylis will be developing a new guidewire along with a coating process that will improve tactile feedback and provide physicians with improved wire tracking.

Funding under the AMF will help the company to commercialize and manufacture these new medical device product lines, improve productivity for in-house manufacturing and it is expected that 30 research and development jobs and 60 manufacturing jobs will be created in Ontario. In addition, the project will enhance Baylis’ global competitiveness, while strengthening Ontario’s medical device cluster. This is in line with the AMF’s objective of investing in transformative projects within sophisticated niche sectors.

The (ACOA) Atlantic Canada Opportunity Agency is supporting Aerospace manufacturer Bradeans Tool & Die LTD. with a technology investment of around 64 thousand dollars in funding from ACOA.

The business development program is to add an enterprise resource planning system, this system will track quality control data and assist the management in making timely informed decisions. Adding this system will eliminate duplicate data entry and improve overall operational efficiency. Bradeans co-owners are saying that they need to do this for the ability to grow the business, eliminate all the paperwork and allow employees to actually track what the costs will be for each job allow users to track delivery times. Efficiency will be improved dramatically.

The company builds built-to specifications products including drop hammer dies, stretched form blocks and injection moulds. By continuing and improving it’s infrastructure and processes the company has been able to meet the demanding requirements of the aerospace industry. One of the biggest improvement was to add a five-axis vertical milling center with a robotic arm. This machine produces highly complex parts with intricate shapes that will enable Bradeans to create new types of components with great efficiency. ACOA has provided 223 thousand dollars in repayable contributions to this project to that was valued well over 1 million dollars, the company itself will invest the rest of the money.

Government Business Loan for Seafood Processing Facility

Governments of Canada and New Brunswick Invest in Knocean Foods Ltd.

Scoudouc, NB, August 13th 2014

Knocean Foods Ltd., a value-added food processing company, announced news today of a combined investment from the Government of Canada and the Province of New Brunswick for equipment purchases for their newly built seafood processing facility, which will result in export sales and the creation of up to 25 new new jobs for the region.

The project involved the construction of a 23,000 square foot processing facility in the Scoudouc Industrial Park and the purchase of production equipment.

The facility is also expected to increase demand for locally sourced seafood especially lobster.

The Government of Canada and New Brunswick both invested $500,000 in the form of repayable loans in this project. New Brunswick also provided a $225,000 payroll rebate over 6 years for the creation and maintenance of 25 positions.

New Brunswick’s fish and seafood sector is a vital component of the province’s social and economic fabric. More than 7,000 New Brunswickers are employed in the province’s fish and seafood industry, which was responsible for an average of 21.3 percent of Canada’s fish and seafood exports to the world between 2010 and 2012.

One in five Canadian jobs is linked to exports, and the Government of Canada recognizes the important role that opening new markets plays in Canada’s long-term prosperity. That is why it has prioritized initiatives such as the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement and the Canada-Korea Free Trade Agreement – so that leading exporters can continue to grow and fuel the region’s prosperity for many years to come.

New London, PEI, July 28th 2014

The Government of Canada today announced a combined investment of $205,000 for Raspberry Point Oyster Co.

With this assistance, Raspberry Point Oyster Co. will be purchasing new oyster grading and aquaculture equipment to expand their current operation, improve efficiencies and productivity, and meet growing market demand for their product. With this new technology the company is able to reduce costs and increase trade capabilities in markets such as North America, Europe, and Asia. The Canadian Government is committed to help funding projects that increase Canadian export competitiveness in an increasingly global marketplace.

The Government of Canada provided a repayable contribution of $195,000 to help with the expansion. The Government of Prince Edward Island has invested an additional $10,000 through the Department of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development’s Aquaculture Technology Program.

In 2013 Raspberry Point Oyster Co. sold over 4.5 million oysters and through this expansion it is expected that the company will increase sales by an additional million oysters.

CLEAN ENERGY FIRM RECIEVES FUNDING FROM THE GOVERNMENT OF CANADA TO PRODUCE BIO-BASED LUBRICANTS AND FUELS

Altranex Corporation has entered into a Contribution Agreement with the National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP). Canada’s premier innovation assistance program for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The funding under the agreement will share the cost for Altranex to scale-up the production of Altranex’s Altra-HF™ shipping fuel and other products. The financial support is up to $200,000.

Funding for Nova Scotia Based Music Company

Sydney, NS – June 6th, 2014

Billdidit Inc. of Sydney, NS a company that designs and produces innovative products for the music industry, has received a $500,000 repayable contribution from the Government of Canada to help build a facility for the production of hardware and accessories for drummers.

Background:

Billdidit has extensive experience in product development, commercialization, manufacturing management and technical support. The company primarily develops and sells drum and percussion related equipment.

The company’s products are used by amateur, recording and touring percussionists from around the world who perform with well-known artists of many musical genres.

They have developed products for domestic and international partners. They currently have four product patents and nine patents pending.

The new facility will focus on producing low to mid-volume products for Billdidit and Sabian Cymbals. It is expected to create 20 jobs immediately with the potential to add additional jobs as the facility ramps up production.

Government Small Business Loan for Micro-Brewery

FUNDING FOR QUEBEC MANUFACTURING BUSINESS

Joliette, Quebec – November 2013

Micro-Brasserie L’Alchimiste has been granted financial assistance as government funding for the purchase of updated brewing equipment for their plant in Quebec.

Micro-Brasserie L’Alchimiste produces beers for general consumers, specialty craft beers and private-label beers for distribution all across Quebec. The business, has grown considerably since its establishment in 2001and is at the stage where it needs to modernize its equipment in order to continue growing.

The funded project involves the installation of fermenters, a conditioning tank and packaging and handling equipment for the brewery. The plant also intends to automate part of the production line, increasing productivity and improving capacity.

The Government of Canada believes economic prosperity is achieved through investments like the one Micro-Brasserie L’Alchimiste is making to raise its production capacity and competitiveness,” said a government spokesperson.
